Last bout of ‘09- October 17, 2009 Rhode Island Convention Center RI Killah Bees (L) 64 vs. Pioneer Valley’s Western Mass Destruction 105 Rhode Island Riveters (W) 109 vs. Connecticut Rollergirl’s Stepford Sabotage 52 The Riveters helped us close the best season yet (6 wins, 4 losses) with a win against our friends from CT. It was well played on both sides with few penalties and tremendous energy from the skaters and their fans. The Riveters encountered the Stepford Sabotage a few weeks ago at regionals where the Riveters took home 6th place and beat CT 142 to 57. This win was a great way to thank our fans, friends, families, skaters, volunteers, and everyone who helped make this 5th year of PRD the best yet! The Killah Bees tried their best to pull it through and get a win against the tough fighting Western Mass Destruction, but at the half they were already behind and the theme just stuck. They had some great plays. Barbie Biturate, Maul E. Crue, Rhoda Perdition, and Vicious Stylz proudly wore the star as they jamed through walls made up of Western Mass vets like Pink Panzer and Nora Morse. Absent was Shamblock (Rats, Killah Bees) who is still recovering from a collar bone injury suffered in the Championship bout. Whats next? Providence Roller Derby’s 5th Year Providence Roller Derby’s 2009 season brought us some great memories and many firsts. A record number of new skaters entered the newbie ranks, with a highest skater retention than previous years. It was also a great year for the Riveters, gaining a spot on Derby News Network’s Top 25 Power Rankings. Providence ended the 2009 season holding on to 6th Place in The East. A testament to their hard work in the off season. This year was also the first time the Rats got to championships, unseating the Old Money Honeys and taking the 2009 Home Season Championship title! We were awarded Providence Monthly’s “Best Role Model for Young Girls,” a real honor for a sport still working to clear through misconceptions about our legitimacy. “Dressed in short shorts and fishnet stockings and sporting monikers like Craisy Dukes and Rhode Kill, we thought these were the kind of women we should keep away from our impressionable young daughters. We were wrong. Our preschool testers love the friendliness, fast-paced action and easy-to-grasp rules, while we swoon for the athletic prowess and sheer guts on display.
